The harsh or hoarse sound that is caused by air flowing past relaxed tissues in the throat is commonly referred to as snoring.   • Grade 1 – often referred to as “simple snoring”, Grade 1 snoring applies to individuals who only snore occasionally and don’t make a lot of noise in the process.  Breathing is typically normal and any health issues that are associated with Grade 1 snoring are often minimal.  The only negative impact is on the spouse or sleep partner and can result in relationship problems.
  • Grade 2 – this particular snorer experiences snoring episodes during 3 or more nights a week.  In some cases, the person experiences breathing difficulties ranging in severity from mild to moderate.  Grade 2 snoring can result in daytime sleepiness and fatigue.
  • Grade 3 – this grade is characterized by very loud snoring that can be heard outside of the bedroom.  In many instances, individuals that are considered Grade 3 snorers are OSA or obstructive sleep apnea sufferers.  In these cases, the individual’s airway gets partially or completely obstructed and interrupts their breathing for several seconds at a time.  This may cause the individual to awaken abruptly yet they will have no memory of doing so when confronted with the problem by their spouse or partner.

It should be noted that frequent or habitual loud snoring may be much more than an annoyance or nuisance for the spouse or sleep partner of the snorer.  If your snoring is associated with obstructive sleep apnea, this increases the risk of other health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), and stroke.

What can You do to Alleviate the Problem?

It’s important to note that not everyone who snores has sleep apnea.  In many cases, frequent snoring can be attributed to numerous factors such as:

  • The anatomy of your mouth such as extra throat tissue or a thick soft palate
  • Consuming alcohol before bedtime
  • Nasal problems such as congestion, a deviated septum, or nasal polyps
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Sleeping on one’s back

  • Surgical procedures – there are certain procedures that help to alleviate snoring if it is so severe that it decreases your quality of life by posing a threat to your overall health.  For instance, adenoidectomies or tonsillectomies remove large adenoids and tonsils that can obstruct the airway.  Other surgical procedures include:
  • Laser-assisted uvulapalatoplasty (LAUP)
  • Radio frequency ablation (RFA) of the soft palate
  • Soft palate implants
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
