Most of us would agree that snoring can be annoying, especially for the person sleeping with the snorer.  However, what most people don’t realize is that the side effects can wreak havoc on a person’s health and increase the need for anti-snoring remedies.  No matter what causes your snoring, the ill effects of it on your health can go beyond getting elbowed in the ribs or kicked by your sleeping partner.

Additionally, the bed partner is equally affected by the noise all night through. From sleep deprivation to poor alertness and drowsiness in the daytime, the couple suffers from it together. The snorer does not get a proper night’s sleep due to frequent snorting and chocking due to obstacles in the breathing patterns. Thus, poor sleep has cognitive and behavioral changes which affect relationships.

If you or your loved one suffers with a chronic snoring condition, you need to be aware of these side effects:

Arrhythmias or irregular heart rhythm

One of the more serious threats to a person’s health that’s associated with snoring is arrhythmia or an irregular heart rhythm.  When you combine an abnormal heart rhythm with sleep apnea, it can be very dangerous.

Choking, gasping, and interrupted breathing

This is probably the most obvious (and scariest) side effect of snoring, especially when a person is suffering with sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder that can lead to more serious health problems.

Chronic headaches

If you find yourself waking up with a headache, this is one of the possible side effects of snoring.  For some snorers, the lack of sleep after a stressful day can cause you to wake up with a headache.

Daytime drowsiness and fatigue

When snoring prevents you from getting the deep sleep you need, it will cause you to be tired throughout the following day.  Additionally, it can be dangerous to drive or operate machinery if you’re fatigued from not sleeping.

GERD

Changes in air pressure caused by chronic snoring can often cause or worsen gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD.

Problems for your partner

Nobody wants to disturb their partner’s sleep, but this is another common side effect associated with snoring.  People who sleep with chronic snorers often develop the same symptoms associated with disturbed sleep.

Psychological issues

A lack of sleep due to chronic snoring has been associated mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Stroke

Chronic snoring has been linked to carotid atherosclerosis (a narrowing of arteries in the neck) which in turn increases the risk of having a stroke.

There are dozens of anti-snoring remedies and solutions available today.  Some are medical and require a doctor’s care in the more extreme cases while others are natural non-invasive remedies.  So, you need to ensure that you find one of the many snoring remedies that work.

Natural remedies that can effectively treat snoring:

Avoid drinking alcohol and quit smoking

Drinking alcohol too soon before bedtime can cause snoring.  Furthermore, if you smoke, this irritates the tissues in your throat, causes inflammation, and results in snoring.

Change your sleeping position

Individuals who sleep on their backs are more prone to snoring than those who are side sleepers. That is because your tongue tends to fall into the throat leading to gagging noises and higher obstruction in the airways. Changing your sleeping position can be difficult.  We recommend using a body pillow to help you sleep on your side.

Cut down on inflammatory foods

Dairy and gluten products can cause nose and throat tissues to become inflamed and partially block airflow, thereby causing you to snore.  Cut back on milk and substitute some tea once in a while.

Exercise at least every other day

Certain exercises will strengthen the throat and tongue muscles.  Snoring happens when these muscles get too relaxed and partially obstruct your airflow.

Get plenty of sleep

Exhaustion from sleep deprivation can cause the muscles of the throat and tongue to relax and restrict airflow which will cause you to snore.  It’s best if you can get 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. It helps to sleep on your side instead of on your back. Your airways open up better and reduces the snores.

Learn your snoring patterns

Finding out as much as you can about when you are snoring as well as what’s causing you to snore more often is the first step to learning about your snoring habits and patterns.

Lose weight

Overweight individuals are twice as likely to snore as people who keep the weight off.  Those extra pounds can cause extra fat to develop around the neck.  This narrows the airway and causes snoring.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration causes mucus to form in your nose and obstruct your nasal airway.  Men should drink about a gallon of water daily while women should drink at least 3 quarts in order to stay properly hydrated.

Use a facial steam bowl before bedtime –

This helps to open your airways and reduce your snoring.  Get close enough to absorb the steam; just don’t get so close that you get burned by the steam. You cand o this a couple of times in a day to ensure a proper night’s rest.

Use a humidifier

Dry air can aggravate snoring.  Use a humidifier to keep the air in your bedroom moist.  This helps to lubricate the throat and makes it easier for air to be inhaled and exhaled.
