Snoring is the harsh sound that occurs when your airflow is obstructed during sleep.  In some cases, when a person is sleeping, the air they breathe travels past relaxed throat tissues causing them to vibrate.  The result is snoring.  Nearly everyone snores at some point for various reasons. Whether it is allergies or a cold, as soon as the nasal passages have inflammation, the airways narrow down and snoring starts. Basically, snorers are the sound made when the air passes over loose tissue in narrow nasal passages. The vibrations caused by breathing causes the noise.

However, for some individuals it’s a chronic problem. The reality is that long-term, loud snoring can elevate a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, or other serious health issues. While lifestyle changes such as avoiding alcohol, losing weight, or sleeping on your side can help reduce the incidence of snoring, medical devices and surgery are also options that can help you stop snoring. It is important to try remedies to stop snoring as soon as you are made aware of your health issue.

Common Causes of Snoring

Air is pushed through the mouth, nose, and throat when you breathe.  So if your airway is obstructed or restricted, tissues vibrate against one another as the air is forced through and causes you to snore. With a varied range of snoring types- habitual, occasional or mild snoring, the reasons vary.  There are several conditions and factors that can cause airflow to be restricted during sleep including:

  • alcohol and sedatives that cause muscles to relax and restrict your airflow
  • anatomical issues in the mouth, nose, or throat that compress your airway
  • bulky soft tissues such as enlarged adenoids, tongue, or tonsils
  • excess body fat that compresses the airway by putting pressure on the soft tissues
  • low mouth, nose, or throat muscle tone or weakness
  • nasal congestion and inflammation caused by allergies, colds, and flu as well as irritants in the air you breathe
  • pregnancy hormones that cause nasal inflammation

What are Anti-snoring Devices?

Snoring can cause distress and a lack of sleep for the snorer as well as their partner.  Furthermore, snoring is often associated with numerous metabolic disorders such as cardiovascular disease.  Depending on the severity of the condition, snoring treatments can be surgical or non-surgical such as anti-snoring devices.  No two snorers are the same.  Consequently, there’s no one-size-fits-all remedy or treatment for snoring.

This is due to the fact that there are numerous causes of snoring.  When it comes to learning how to use snoring devices, the most effective anti-snoring remedies include:

Specialist pillows

One of the better non-invasive snoring remedies are these anti-snoring pillows.  There are three designs to choose from:

  • CPAP pillows that have cut-outs to accommodate the hose and mask of a CPAP machine, thereby preventing accidental misalignment or removal and pressure on the face
  • Pillows that encourage sleeping on your side
  • Realignment pillows that align the head and neck to help keep the airway open

Mandibular advancement devices or MAD’s

These mouthpieces are effective solutions for nearly 50% of all snorers.  These devices push the lower jaw forward and tighten airway tissues that are prone to relaxing and making the snoring noise.  MADs are ideal for:

  • individuals who snore because they are obese or extremely overweight
  • individuals who snore worse when sleeping on their backs
  • individuals who wake up with headaches or sore throats
  • individuals whose snoring worsens with age

There are several different types of these anti-snoring devices so choosing one that works for you can be a bit challenging.  We recommend getting a device that is custom fitted by a dentist whenever possible. It is good to get an evaluation done to know where the issues lays and then get appropriate treatment.

Air humidifiers and purifiers

This is another remedy for snoring.  Air purifiers can help individuals who snore because of allergies and pollution.  Allergens and irritants tend to inflame the upper airway and cause sore throats and stuffy noses.  In turn, this increases resistance when breathing.  Air purifiers are ideal for snorers who:

  • have hay fever
  • have pets in the home
  • live in polluted areas
  • smoke or live with a smoke
  • suffer with dust allergies

Be sure that you check the air purifier for the type of filter it’s equipped with and the size of particles that it eliminates before making your purchasing decision.  Furthermore, humidifiers can be effective anti-snoring devices because they add moisture to dry air and are an ideal solution for individuals who:

  • are pregnant
  • have dry airways from using a CPAP machine
  • have frequent colds or sinus issues
  • live in dryer climates
  • sleep with their mouths open
  • use A/C in their homes

Nasal dilators

nasal blockages trigger snoring in many individuals.  One of the more popular anti-snoring devices is the nasal dilator.  These have a number of advantages over other devices because they:

  • are cost-effective compared to other anti-snoring solutions
  • are fairly comfortable and non-invasive
  • are non-medicinal, can be used by anyone, and have no side effects
  • provide near instant relief
  • remain effective despite continued use
