Have the nights seemed long as you frequently wake up gasping for breath or have your bed partner’s nudges kept you awake because as soon as you fall asleep, you start snoring? Irrespective of whether you snore heavily or snore regularly, the fact remains that you need to stop snoring.

Snoring has long been considered an annoying, uncomfortable issue that can disrupt a person’s sleep.  However, chronic snoring not only hinders the quality of sleep that an individual gets, it can also pose a serious threat to their health and well-being.  Is it normal for a person to snore? Yes.  Nearly everybody snores periodically when the muscles of the throat relax and causes vibrations as air flows through the airway.

Anatomical alterations such as a deviated septum in the nose or excess tissue in the neck and throat area narrow the passageway in the throat and cause you to snore.  In cases such as these, abnormal anatomical structures can be harmless and snoring is considered normal.  Nose and throat inflammation due to allergies, colds, and other respiratory illnesses are also considered causes of normal snoring.

When Snoring is considered Abnormal

Abnormal or chronic snoring is often considered dangerous and can pose a serious threat to a person’s health.  For instance, it could indicate certain health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, mental health concerns, sleep apnea, and strokes.  The symptoms listed below are characteristic of the chronic or habitual snorer:

  • being awoken with breathing difficulties
  • daytime sleepiness
  • frequent or loud snoring
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • irritability and mood swings
  • lack of focus or poor concentration
  • morning headaches
  • nighttime pauses in breathing
  • restless sleep
  • weight gain

If you’ve suffered with any or a combination of these symptoms, we encourage you to see your doctor and discuss possible anti-snoring products that you could try.  You may want to talk about how to use anti-snoring devices as well.

Is loud snoring normal? Absolutely not as this may be an indicator or symptom of sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous disorder where a person’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts while sleeping.  Although light snoring isn’t considered as serious, you don’t want to ignore it.  Sometimes light snoring can indicate that a person is in the earlier stages of sleep apnea.

What can You do if You’re a frequent Snorer?

Before you start shopping for anti snoring products or learn how to use anti-snoring devices, there are certain home remedies and lifestyle changes that you should try first.  These include:

  • Avoid or eliminate the use of alcohol at night – try not to drink alcohol a minimum of 3 hours before going to be as it relaxes the throat muscles and causes snoring.
  • Consider losing weight – if you’re overweight, shedding a few pounds will decrease the amount of throat tissue you have and reduce your risk of snoring. Taking a walk, exercising and staying active helps.
  • Don’t take sedatives before going to bed – just like alcohol, sedatives can also cause your throat muscles to relax. Talk with your doctor about alternate medication or lower the dose if sedatives are part of your routine prescription medicines.
  • Elevate the head of your bed – raising the head of the bed will help keep your airways open and reduce the risk of snoring.
  • Get enough sleep – the Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research suggest getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. It can be difficult if you snore so it is best to find a good anti snoring solution to get a good night’s sleep.
  • If you smoke, try to quit – smoking can make snoring worse and may increase your risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Smoke causes the air passages to get inflamed due to the corrosive action of tar and nicotine. That makes your airways narrower and leads to the higher vibration of the tissue when you inhale or exhale.
  • Try sleeping on your side – sleeping on your back can cause your tongue to move towards the back of your throat, impede your airflow, and cause you to snore.
  • Use a nasal dilator or nasal strips – (see below under “Medical Treatments.”)

If you’ve followed these suggestions and are still experiencing problems with frequent snoring, then it’s probably time to see a doctor or sleep medicine specialist and ask what anti-snoring products might help in your situation.  Additionally, a specialist may be able to help by explaining how to use how to use anti-snoring devices and products we discuss in the following section.

Medical Treatments

In the more severe cases of snoring, seeking a doctor’s care and medical treatment may be recommended in order to address the underlying condition that is causing you to snore.  The more commonly used medical treatments for treating a person’s snoring as well as the cause includes:

  • Consider an RFA (radio frequency ablation) treatment or Somnoplasty to shrink soft palate tissue by using low-intensity radio waves
  • Correcting any anatomical structural problems such as a deviated septum
  • Inserting palatal implants into the soft palate in order to improve OSA or stop snoring
  • Undergo a UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) procedure to widen your airway by removing excess throat tissue
  • Using a CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure machine
  • Using customized oral appliances that advance the lower jaw, change the soft palate’s position, or retract the tongue
